Welcome

This is an exciting time to join Thurrock Council, recently shortlisted in The MJ Awards for both Council of the Year and Senior Leadership Team of the Year, as our Assistant Director of Legal Services and Monitoring Officer.

In this crucial role, you will act as the Council’s Monitoring Officer and work closely with our Elected Members, the Chief Executive and Directors as part of the Council’s Senior Management Team. You will ensure that Councillors and Officers maintain high standards of conduct and foster good governance across the organisation. You will also manage Legal and Democratic Services, ensuring expert legal advice is provided to Officers and Elected Members, supporting them in transforming and shaping services.

You will be joining a passionate and highly supportive senior team, committed to achieving the best outcomes for Thurrock’s residents, businesses and communities. A natural relationship builder, you will be able to build and maintain good relationships both internally and externally. You will be an influencer, able to challenge, build consensus and negotiate, as well as being adept in explaining complexity in a clear way.

We are seeking a candidate with senior legal experience within local government, someone who understands complexity of leading services within a political context and with a positive and resilient approach. You will be ambitious with experience of innovating, leading change and inspiring teams.

This is an exciting time to join Thurrock and further develop your career. Thurrock, located on the north bank of the Thames to the east of London, is a place of great ambition and huge growth. We are the largest regeneration area in the country, with an expected £6.6billion of investment over the next 10 years. Home to a vibrant creative industry and arts scene, a growing retail and leisure offer and no less than 3 international ports, Thurrock is London’s gateway. We have excellent transport links into London, with London Fenchurch Street being only 30 minutes by train, yet are surrounded by the beautiful countryside of Essex.

Please do take some time to explore this microsite and take the opportunity to speak to our advising consultants at GatenbySanderson to learn more about this fantastic role. There really no better time to join us.

I look forward to meeting you.
